How to Measure Curtains

Getting accurate measurements ensures your curtains hang beautifully and perform properly. You only need two key measurements: WIDTH (how wide) and DROP (how long).

1. What You’ll Need

  • ✅ Metal tape measure
  • ✅ Pen and paper (or digital notes)
  • ✅ A ladder (for high windows)

Pro tip: Use a metal tape measure — cloth or plastic tapes can stretch and give inaccurate results.

Tools needed to measure curtains: metal tape measure, pen/pencil and paper.

2. Curtain Width: How to Measure

Measure the track or pole width, not the inside of the window frame.

  • If you already have a track or pole: Measure from end to end — include the full width of the pole or track.
  • If you don’t have one yet: Decide where you want the pole/track to sit — typically 10–15 cm (4–6”) above the window and extend 10–15 cm (4–6”) beyond each side of the window frame. This allows the curtains to stack back fully when open.

With track/pole fitted

Measure curtain track or pole width end to end.

No track or pole yet

Suggested pole position: extend beyond window and above frame.

Important: Curtains should be wider than the window so they look full when closed.

3. Curtain Drop: How to Measure

This is how far the curtain will hang from top to bottom.

Measuring Drop:

  • Measure from the top of the track (or top of the pole ring)
  • Down to where you want the curtain to finish:
  • 📍 Sill finish: just above the windowsill
  • 📍 Below sill: a few centimetres below
  • 📍 Floor length: to the floor — decide if you want them to just kiss the floor or have a slight break
Curtain drop options: sill length, below sill, and floor length.

For a classic look, floor-length curtains usually work best — just 1–2 cm above the floor to avoid dragging.

4. Tips for Accurate Measuring

  • ✔ Take 3 width measurements (left, centre, right) and use the largest — avoids curtains that are too narrow.
  • ✔ Take 3 drop measurements — use the longest — windowsills and floors are rarely perfectly level.
  • ✔ Measure to the nearest millimetre for precision.
Measure curtains at left, centre and right; use largest width and longest drop.

Measurement Summary (Example)

Measurement Example
Track / Pole Width 1800 mm
Curtain Drop 2280 mm
